Feeling blissfully content from all the vitamin D she had soaked up yesterday in the orchard, and the kind hospitality Gio’s family had shown her, Maddie was spending the day exploring the island, keen to photograph all the iconic landmarks to add to her portfolio. She had already visited Certosa di San Giacomo, the ancient, abandoned Roman monastery that had been built in 1371, and taken a selection of photos showcasing the spectacular white stone architecture, the open grass courtyards striking with their fuchsia flowering trees set against the cerulean sky. Up high on the hillside with the view of the Mediterranean, Maddie had loved wandering around in the blistering heat before retreating to the shade of the majestic colonnaded walkways, cooled by the refreshing sea air, and relishing the tranquillity and stillness of the place.

‘Lei vorrebbe provare il profumo?’ a handsome Italian man holding a bottle of perfume asked as she looked at all the different fragrances on the shelves.

‘Sorry I don’t under—’

He smiled and repeated in perfect English: ‘Would you like to try the perfume?’

‘Oh yes, please,’ she replied, taking the strip of card that he had sprayed generously and handed to her. Pressing it to her nose, she inhaled and was immediately transported to that moment on the boat when she first arrived in Capri with the gloriously enveloping warm air that was fragranced with a sumptuous scent of lemons, holidays, and happiness … juniper and myrtle too. ‘It’s beautiful,’ she breathed, looking at the label on the bottle. Capri Forget Me Not. She decided to treat herself to a bottle as a souvenir so she would never forget this perfect holiday – her first time abroad, travelling solo and having such a good time following her first assignment as a proper professional photographer. It was a special moment for Maddie, and she wanted to
